What Is HEIF and When Do You Need PNG
HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) is a high-efficiency image compression format used on iPhone, iPad, and several modern cameras. HEIF files are smaller than JPG at comparable quality, making them convenient for on-device storage. Extensions can be .heif or .heic - technically these are the same format family.
The problem arises when a HEIF file needs to go beyond Apple devices - to a service, application, or platform that does not support HEIF. PNG in these situations is a reliable choice: the format is supported everywhere, preserves every pixel during conversion, and supports transparency.
Why PNG and Not JPG
For HEIF photos from an iPhone the common question is: PNG or JPG? The answer depends on the task.
PNG is lossless. Every pixel from the original HEIF is preserved exactly. PNG supports transparency and is well suited for further editing: inserting into layouts, adding annotations, working in editors where pixel accuracy matters. PNG files are generally larger than JPG from the same source.
JPG is lossy. It is more compact and accepted everywhere, but degrades the image through compression and does not support transparency.
Choose PNG when:
- the file will be edited or used in a design workflow;
- accurate color reproduction is needed;
- the output file needs to support transparency;
- the target service explicitly requests PNG;
- the file will serve as a working copy, not just for sharing.
If you simply need to send a photo to someone or upload it to a form, HEIF to JPG will produce a more compact file.
Compatibility: Where HEIF Does Not Open
HEIF does not open without additional codecs or components on:
- Windows 10/11 (requires a paid codec or a store update by default);
- many online editors;
- older CMS platforms;
- image processing applications without explicit HEIF support.
PNG opens everywhere without any additional installation.
Real Use Cases
Photo for an editor or layout. A HEIF photo needs to go into a banner, template, or design file. The PNG version opens in any editor and retains all detail during processing.
Image with annotations. You need to add arrows, text labels, or highlights to a phone photo. PNG is well suited for this - clean annotation lines will not be blurred by compression.
Upload to a service that requires PNG. Some internal systems, educational platforms, and upload services explicitly accept PNG and reject HEIF. Conversion resolves the issue directly.
Phone scan for a document workflow. A HEIF photo of a contract page or certificate needs to open in Windows and be added to a PDF editor. PNG solves the compatibility problem without losing readability.
Long-term photo archive. PNG is an open standard that will work on any platform years from now. For archiving important photos, PNG is more future-proof than proprietary formats.
What Is Preserved and What May Differ
When converting HEIF to PNG:
- the main image is preserved without quality loss;
- transparency is supported by the format (if the HEIF source contained an alpha channel);
- camera-specific metadata may not transfer (Live Photo motion, depth data, HDR extensions).
For ordinary photos this is not critical. If Live Photo motion or specialized camera data matters, keep the original HEIF.
Also check color rendering: HEIF may use a wide color gamut (Display P3), and PNG conversion may shift to sRGB. On most monitors the difference is invisible, but it is worth noting for print work or professional color correction.
What to Check After Conversion
- Make sure the image did not rotate - mobile photos sometimes change orientation when changing format.
- Zoom in on important details - text, faces, fine elements - to confirm readability.
- Check that the file size fits the requirements of the target system.
- Keep the original HEIF file as the master.
Related Tasks
If the goal is just to share the photo rather than edit it, use HEIF to JPG for a more compact file. If the photo needs to become a document, use HEIC to PDF. For combining multiple photos into one file, use Merge HEIC to PDF.
What is HEIF to PNG conversion used for
Photo for an editor or design project
A HEIF photo needs to go into a banner, template, or design project. PNG opens in any editor without compatibility issues.
Document photo with annotations
Arrows and notes need to be added to a phone photo. PNG provides clean annotation lines without compression artifacts.
Upload to a PNG-only system
An educational platform or corporate system only accepts PNG. Converting HEIF resolves the format incompatibility.
Lossless archive
PNG as an open lossless standard is a solid choice for long-term archiving of important photos from a phone.
Tips for converting HEIF to PNG
Keep the original HEIF
For important photos do not delete the HEIF original. Live Photo motion, depth data, and other camera features are not carried over to PNG.
Check the orientation
After conversion open the PNG and confirm the image has not rotated. Mobile photos sometimes change orientation when the format changes.
PNG is larger than JPG - check upload limits
If the target service has a file size limit, make sure the PNG fits within the allowed size. Resize the image if needed before uploading.
Consider JPG for simple sharing
If the goal is just to send the photo to someone rather than edit it, JPG will produce a more compact file with the same compatibility.
